I had to edit my email address here and happened to read my last few posts. I just realized that I hadn't posted about my sweet Max.
( Cut so you won't be spammed. )
Hrm, I'm gonna have to cut this. I wrote much more than I intended. Just normal for me -- once I start talking, I don't stop easily ;)

Air Force Aims for Control of 'Any and All' Computers

Noah Shachtman on Wired.com's Danger Room reports that Monday, the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson AFB introduced a two-year, $11 million effort to put together hardware and software tools for 'Dominant Cyber Offensive Engagement.''Of interest are any and all techniques to enable user and/or rootlevel access,' a request for proposals notes, 'to both fixed (PC) ormobile computing platforms ... any and all operating systems, patchlevels, applications and hardware.' This isn't just some computerscience study, mind you; 'research efforts under this program areexpected to result in complete functional capabilities.' The Air Forcehas already announced their desire to manage an offensive BotNet, comprised of unwitting participatory computers. How long before they slip a root kit on you?

Cccccccold weather! What happened to the sunny South? ;)
Jan. 3rd, 2008 | 03:48 am

mood:
cold
music: John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band - Wild Summer Nights
It's 23 degrees F. (-5 C.) on my front porch. I've managed to warm this room all the way to 48 degrees (9 C) :P
The high tomorrow will be 48 degrees. And 20 (-7 C.) tomorrow night. I realize some of you are sneering at such gentle cold weather, but we're not used to it down here. It hasn't gotten this cold in eight or nine years!
I'm going to spend the night with Bonnie tomorrow night. At least I can get warm enough to sleep there.
I'm praying for my pipes. They're about fifty years old, and not wrapped. I hope they can take this stress. I've got a faucet running in the back yard and one in the kitchen.
No resolutions this year, I think. I'll just do the best I can with what I have and try harder than before to get it all right ;)
I hope all of you have a happy, healthy, and worry-free 2008. You've been generous with your hugs and well wishes through my and my family's crises, and you're appreciated whole bunches!

Nyx update
Dec. 12th, 2007 | 03:43 am
mood:
numb
Well, after so long, Nyx is dead.
( Cut with gory details that might ruin appetites )
I miss him. Well, I would. I had him 14 years. I look around to see what he's doing. I automatically check to see if he has food and water. And so on.
Everyone advises me to get another one immediately. I don't think so. For one thing, it wouldn't feel right. I wouldn't get another cat when I had Nyx because I knew he wouldn't like it, and now I just need some time before I make that decision. It's not one that's easy to get out of if one changes one's mind.
I do know that I'll never own a pet again without having pet insurance. If I'd been able to afford it, I'd have insisted on the vet's taking the leg at the beginning. The cat would have had a fighting chance that way, at least.
As far as anything else in my life goes, it's pretty much all the same, I think.
I think I'm going to cancel December from now on. I lose far too much in Decembers.

News about Nyx
Aug. 1st, 2007 | 12:18 pm
mood:
grateful
Nothing will be done. The vet thinks that the tumour is benign, and since it doesn't bother Nyx and the circulation isn't being cut off and he has full use of the leg, we should just leave it alone. He could try to remove it, but it's so big it would involve nerves and vessels and too much muscle loss. I'm so relieved! I had decided that if it came to it, I'd tell him to amputate, and I'm very pleased it didn't come to that.
Thank all of you for your hugs and good wishes!
Love,
Pam

Cutting down carbon emissions (particularly for US, but applicable to most)

Pledge to buy one pound of local food a week!
Because 'going local' is a small step that can lead to big change. Food in the U.S. typically travels 1500 miles and generates five to 17 times more carbon emissions than food grown locally.

Aren't animals wonderful? For hours I was upset and worried and everything negative untiil I put Nyx in my lap. Now I'm still mentally whirling because there's no way out without hurting someone but I'm calm and relaxed. In the space of ten minutes!
He is getting bossier, though. When he considers it cold enough or late enough to go to bed, he goes to the door and complains with that annoying Siamese voice!

No new news, except the the common sense-less doc has _finally_ (after over 8 months of intense pain and increasing loss of mobility) decided to x-ray the knee. On the other hand, the doc the sense-less one referred to me is a very kind one who actually believes people hurt, and gave me methadone. (Don't worry, Martin, I'm being very stingy with them, and only take a half pill maybe twice or three times a week, when the twitchies get bad.)
Kinda makes one wonder, doesn't it? ;)
